Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa (SLUK), Jigawa State, has graduated 4,109 students across six academic sessions, with 154 achieving first-class honours at its second combined convocation ceremony. The event, scheduled for Saturday, will formally present the graduates to society, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s growth.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim-Yakasai disclosed the achievements during a press briefing on Thursday. He highlighted the university’s academic expansion, including the introduction of postgraduate programmes and the restructuring of the School of Preliminary Studies into the School of Preliminary and Continuing Education (SPACE). Preparations are also underway to launch a College of Medicine, further broadening the institution’s academic offerings.
The degree classifications revealed that 154 students earned first-class honours, 1,326 graduated with second-class upper division, 1,954 with second-class lower division, 649 with third-class, and 26 with pass degrees. This diverse range of achievements underscores the university’s commitment to academic excellence.
Beyond academics, SLUK has made notable infrastructural strides. The campus now features new academic facilities, student hostels, a modern library, road networks, and specialised research centres. The university is also advancing its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and adopting solar energy solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Staff and student welfare remain priorities, with initiatives such as subsidised transportation, accommodation, internet access, and capacity-building programmes. These efforts are supported by the Jigawa State Government and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Prof. Ibrahim-Yakasai expressed gratitude for the state government’s support but appealed for additional staffing and accommodation to meet the growing student population and maintain quality teaching, research, and service delivery. “As our student population continues to grow, we appeal for additional staffing and accommodation support from Jigawa State Government to sustain quality teaching, research and service delivery,” he stated.
The convocation ceremony not only celebrates the graduates’ achievements but also highlights SLUK’s progress as a key institution in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
