Nigeria Immigration Service Probes Extortion Allegations at Lagos-Seme Border

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of widespread extortion by NIS personnel along the Lagos-Seme border corridor. The directive follows reports circulating online accusing officers of demanding bribes from travellers and commercial transporters in the area.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, Mrs. Nandap condemned the alleged misconduct, describing it as “unacceptable” and a violation of the service’s core values, ethics, and operational guidelines.

As part of initial disciplinary measures, the Comptroller General has temporarily relieved the senior officers in charge of the affected commands of their duties. A comprehensive investigation has been launched to identify all personnel involved, with assurances that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken without delay.

Mrs. Nandap reiterated the NIS’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and efficiency in its operations at all entry and exit points across Nigeria. She stressed that the service would not tolerate any actions that undermine public trust or damage its institutional integrity.

To strengthen accountability, the public is encouraged to report misconduct through official NIS communication channels, including its verified social media handles on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook (@nigimmigration). Dedicated contact centre lines—09121900655, 09121556359, and 09121477092—are also available 24 hours a day.

The probe underscores the NIS’s determination to uphold integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration in Nigeria.
