The Imo State government has distanced itself from the arrest of former deputy governor Gerald Irona. Irona was taken into custody on Wednesday in Owerri by operatives of the state police command.
Hours after the arrest, Irona’s spokesperson and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party each issued statements claiming that the arrest had been orchestrated by the state government. The government, however, denied these allegations. Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Special Adviser on Public Communications, Collins Ughalaa, described the claims as “baseless and unfounded.” He said it was “unfortunate” that the former deputy governor’s spokesperson would make such an accusation, emphasizing that the governor does not interfere with police affairs, respects the rule of law, and has no involvement in Irona’s arrest.
