The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed that two victims of the early‑morning train‑BRT collision have died. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, told reporters that the bus was packed with state‑government staff and that the driver acted impatiently. “It is difficult to count how many staff members were on the bus; it was as crowded as a BRT, with some standing because it was fully loaded,” he said. “The driver should have waited for the train, as there was still time—it wasn’t even 8 a.m. yet, so why rush?” Taofiq added that the train dragged the bus, causing some passengers to jump out while others were trapped. “We have rescued about 15 people so far, but we cannot give an exact number. Two people have died,” he said.
Taofiq had earlier confirmed the accident in a statement, noting that a Lagos State Government staff bus (registration no 04A‑48LA) was crushed by a moving train at the PWD in Ikeja on Thursday morning. “The accident caused many casualties because the staff bus was fully loaded with government employees heading to work,” the statement read.
An eyewitness who sought treatment at the optical section of LASUTH, and who asked to remain anonymous, described the scene as “pathetic.” She recounted arriving at LASUTH at 8 a.m. for an eye check‑up and learning that a train had struck a large bus at PWD while it was attempting to cross into Ikeja. “You have to see the crowd at LASUTH, the injured people all soaked in blood, being brought in on a ‘pure water’ truck. I couldn’t stay to watch because the scene was bloody and heartbreaking. They are still bringing more people,” she said.
Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, told our correspondent, “We are resuscitating the victims, please.”
