About 246 complaints of alleged human rights abuses have been received by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State in January and February.
The NHRC coordinator in the state, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, explained that out of the 246 cases, 165 have been treated and 81 pending, and while 174 cases bordered on women and gender issues, 17 were about civil and political rights, unlawful arrests and detention.
According to him, 45 of the cases received were on abandonment of family responsibilities, domestic violence and rape.
He added: “The remaining 10 cases are on access to children, labour rights, among others.”
He said that issues on marital matters between couples were also mediated by the commission, whereby couples are advised to exercise patience with each other to manage their responsibilities.
