The Labour Party has appointed Nollywood actress Hilda Dokubo as the new acting chairman of its River State chapter, just days before the governorship and state assembly elections rescheduled for March 18. In a statement signed by national chairman Julius Abure on Thursday, the party explained that Dokubo’s appointment follows the expiration and subsequent dissolution of the caretaker committee’s tenure. The former caretaker committee was led by Dienye Pepple, with Philip Loveday serving as secretary and Gogo Wellington as publicity secretary. Abure noted that Dokubo’s appointment letter is valid for one month.
Earlier, the Labour Party’s leadership announced the immediate dissolution of the executive council of its Rivers State branch. A statement signed by Abure said that state officials were removed for gross anti‑party activities and corruption in the management of party funds. The dissolution came after reports that the state chapter had collapsed its structure to endorse the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Sim Fubara. Abure added that those who oversaw state affairs, where the presidential mandate of the party’s standard‑bearer Peter Obi was allegedly stolen, should step aside until a full investigation into the last election is completed.
