On 10 March 2023, Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos State responded to the tragic train accident that occurred on Thursday, which claimed six lives and left many injured. Governor Abiodun, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary Kunle Somorin, expressed shock and sadness over the incident. He described the collision between a staff bus and the train as an avoidable accident that tragically took the lives of innocent workers.
Governor Abiodun extended his condolences to Governor Sanwo‑Olu, the people of Lagos, and the bereaved families. He urged them to find solace in the fact that many of the injured are receiving treatment and recovering quickly. While acknowledging the inevitability of death, he prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and called on road and rail users to exercise greater caution.
“We are deeply pained and shocked by this unfortunate occurrence. It is an avoidable one. We join in the mourning of our dear neighbours, and we pray that God in His mercies will repose the soul of the dead and grant them heavenly passage,” he said. “We urge the drivers on our roads as well as those in charge of our coaches to be more proactive and take utmost caution whether in public or private spaces.”
