Berekum Chelsea, a club in the Ghanaian Premier League, has confirmed the tragic death of 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong, who was killed during an armed attack on the team’s bus on Sunday. The incident took place while the team was returning from an away match against Samartex in Samreboi, located in southern Ghana. According to a statement from the club, the bus was ambushed by a group of masked men armed with guns and assault rifles. As the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle, the attackers opened fire, prompting players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
In addition to Frimpong’s death, one player sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) later confirmed Frimpong’s passing, describing it as a significant loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football as a whole. The GFA expressed its condolences, stating, “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”
In response to this incident, the GFA has pledged to enhance security measures for clubs traveling to domestic matches. This attack follows a similar event in 2023, when the bus of another Ghanaian Premier League team, Legon Cities, was targeted by suspected armed robbers; fortunately, no injuries were reported in that earlier incident. The recent killing has raised renewed concerns regarding the safety of football teams traveling across Ghana, particularly in regions known for security challenges. As of now, authorities have not released any details regarding arrests or ongoing investigations related to Sunday’s attack.
