New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen stated on Tuesday that the team has engaged in “good conversations” with the representatives of defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. However, these discussions have not progressed enough to reach an agreement. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the two sides have reached an “impasse,” prompting the Giants to explore trade options with other teams. Rapoport noted that trade talks will continue, and the situation is expected to “come to a head” before the NFL draft, which is set to begin in nine days.
Lawrence, who is under contract through 2027 and is scheduled to earn $20 million in 2026, is seeking a raise. The recent contract extension of Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis, which increased Davis’s new-money average annual value to $26 million, has significantly influenced Lawrence’s negotiations. Should the Giants decide to proceed with a trade, the acquiring team would need to finalize a contract extension with Lawrence before the deal is completed. Otherwise, they would inherit the same contractual uncertainty that the Giants are currently facing.
The Giants’ defensive line has been a cornerstone of their defense, and the potential departure of Lawrence would represent a substantial shift in their roster strategy as they approach the 2025 season.
