Kogi Troops Raid Illegal Mining Site, Arrest 3 Suspects, Recover Arms

Troops of Operation MESA have conducted a raid on an illegal mining site in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, arresting three suspects and seizing weapons and other items. The operation, carried out on April 13 at approximately 1:00 p.m. in the Taki area, was the result of coordinated efforts between soldiers from the 12 Brigade and local vigilantes.

According to counter-insurgency and security expert Zagazola Makama, the suspects identified themselves as gold dealers and members of the Miyetti Allah socio-cultural association. During the raid, troops recovered a locally made pistol, four cartridges, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two motorcycles, three mobile phones, two cutlasses, and ₦68,100 in cash.

The suspects and the seized exhibits are currently in military custody for further investigation and necessary legal action. The operation is part of ongoing efforts by security forces to combat illegal mining and associated criminal activities in the state.

Illegal mining remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, often linked to violence, environmental degradation, and loss of government revenue. Security agencies have intensified operations in affected regions to restore order and protect natural resources. Authorities have urged local communities to cooperate with security forces and report suspicious activities to help curb such illicit operations.
