Spotify launches the ability to purchase physical books in the US and UK

Spotify has officially launched its physical book sales feature in the United States and the United Kingdom, marking a significant expansion beyond its core audio streaming business. This new service allows users to purchase physical books directly through the Spotify app, in partnership with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace that supports independent bookstores. Within the app, audiobook pages feature a “Get a copy for your bookshelf” button that directs users to Bookshop.org’s website, where they can manage pricing, inventory, and shipping. At launch, this feature is available exclusively on Android devices, with iOS access expected to follow next week.

This initiative positions Spotify as a direct competitor to major booksellers and aligns with the company’s broader strategy to become a comprehensive platform for book lovers. In its pursuit of profitability, Spotify has implemented various initiatives, including subscription price increases in the US and Europe, and it recently reported reaching 751 million monthly active listeners. Alongside the rollout of book sales, Spotify has also expanded several audiobook features.

One notable enhancement is the “Page Match” tool, which allows users to scan a page from a physical or e-book and be directed to the corresponding section in the audiobook. This feature now supports more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. Since its English-language launch in February, Spotify has reported that users engaging with Page Match stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours per week and are 62% more likely to listen to titles they had not previously streamed.

Additionally, Spotify has introduced “Audiobook Recaps,” which are short audio summaries tailored to a user’s most recent listening point, now available on Android devices. The company has also rolled out “Audiobook Charts,” similar to its existing Music and Podcast Charts, in Germany, following earlier launches in the US and UK. These charts highlight trending and popular audiobooks, helping users discover new titles. By integrating physical book sales and enhancing audiobook discovery tools, Spotify is broadening its footprint in the publishing sector while reinforcing its position as a multi-format media platform.
