Saudi Arabia May End Fanatics Flag Football Classic Funding

Saudi Arabia’s involvement in international sports ventures may be waning, with fresh signs pointing to a possible withdrawal from the Fanatics Flag Football Classic. According to Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund is reassessing its commitments after recent disputes over the event’s location and timing.

The disagreement reportedly centred on whether to move the March 21 tournament to Los Angeles or postpone it to a later date in Riyadh. Saudi officials ultimately withdrew support for the 2026 edition after the decision to relocate to L.A., leaving uncertainty about future participation.

Despite the funding uncertainty, organisers insist the tournament will go ahead, with or without Saudi backing. The event has played a notable role in raising the profile of flag football in the United States, particularly after the U.S. men’s national team defeated squads of current and former NFL players in all three of their matches.

This exposure is significant for the NFL, which is leveraging flag football as a tool to expand the sport’s global reach. The league sees the discipline’s inclusion in multi-sport events and its growing popularity as vital to its international growth strategy.

The potential retreat from the Fanatics Classic follows reports that Saudi Arabia may also be scaling back its support for LIV Golf, another high-profile sports investment. While no official statement has been made regarding a broader shift in sports strategy, the kingdom’s recent decisions suggest a more selective approach to future commitments.

Observers note that Saudi Arabia’s involvement in global sports has been a key part of its efforts to diversify its economy and improve its international image. Whether this marks a temporary recalibration or a longer-term change in direction remains to be seen, but the impact on the sports industry could be considerable.
