Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his readiness to step aside for Peter Obi if Obi secures the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election. During an interview on Arise News on Wednesday evening, Atiku was directly asked whether he would withdraw from the race should Obi emerge as the ADC’s flagbearer. He confirmed his willingness to do so, stating, “Yes, I will step aside for any winner.” He added, “Of course, if he is a contender, why not?”
Atiku dismissed concerns about the difficulty of stepping aside for Obi, emphasizing their history as former running mates. He remarked, “What is difficult there? It is democracy. It is either you go through consensus or you go through election. You emerge through consensus or emerge through the electoral process.”
Both Atiku and Obi are considered frontrunners for the ADC’s presidential ticket, alongside other potential candidates such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi. Although the ADC has not yet announced the date for its presidential primary, the contest is anticipated to attract significant attention as opposition parties prepare for the 2027 election. Atiku’s willingness to concede to Obi, if necessary, indicates a potential alignment within opposition ranks, aimed at presenting a united front against the ruling party.
