'Love has always been transactional' - Singer Omawumi

Popular Nigerian singer Omawumi has shared her thoughts on the ongoing debate surrounding the transactional nature of modern relationships. She argues that while such dynamics have always existed, they have intensified in recent years. In a recent interview with Pulse, the ‘Bottom Belle’ crooner explained that love has always involved an element of exchange. However, she acknowledged that expectations have become more demanding compared to previous generations.

Omawumi reflected on how the cost of impressing a romantic interest has escalated over time. “Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time,” she stated. She reminisced about her youth, noting that the transactions of affection were simpler back then. “During my youth, our transaction was different because you could impress your crush with just ice cream and popcorn. But now, it is iPhone,” she remarked.

Additionally, the music star pointed out that societal narratives often overemphasize the transactional aspects of relationships while overlooking women’s contributions and reciprocation. She suggested that some men who complain about these dynamics may be choosing partners whose expectations exceed their own means. Her comments come amid broader discussions about changing relationship norms in Nigeria and across Africa, where economic pressures and shifting social expectations have influenced how people approach romance. Omawumi’s perspective adds nuance to the debate, highlighting both the historical continuity and the evolving nature of romantic exchanges in contemporary society.
