Tinubu Congratulates Benin’s New President Wadagni on Election Victory

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election as President of the Republic of Benin, pledging stronger bilateral cooperation between the two neighbouring nations. Wadagni, who served as Benin’s Minister of Finance under outgoing President Patrice Talon, secured a landslide victory in Sunday’s presidential election, winning over 94 per cent of the vote.

In a letter personally signed and released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Thursday in Abuja, Tinubu described Wadagni’s victory as a reflection of the trust reposed in him by the Beninese people. “Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” Tinubu wrote.

The Nigerian leader commended the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to democratic values throughout the electoral process. He emphasised that Nigeria and Benin share longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties that continue to strengthen bilateral relations.

“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties and mutual cooperation,” Tinubu noted, expressing readiness to work closely with the incoming administration to deepen cooperation between both countries. He said such collaboration would enhance regional security and promote economic prosperity within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) frameworks.

Tinubu highlighted the importance of partnerships within these regional blocs, underscoring shared goals for peace, stability, and development. He wished Wadagni wisdom, strength, and success as he prepares to assume office, assuring the President-elect of Nigeria’s support in advancing their mutual objectives.

The election marks a significant transition in Benin’s leadership, with Wadagni set to succeed Talon, who has led the country since 2016. Nigeria and Benin maintain close economic and security cooperation, with cross-border trade and regional stability among their key shared interests.

As Wadagni prepares to take office, both nations are expected to further consolidate their partnership, focusing on economic integration, security collaboration, and regional development initiatives.
