2027: Ex-Minister, Uche Nnaji battles Gov Mbah, pledges single tenure

Enugu State is currently experiencing a notable transformation in its political landscape as the 2027 governorship election approaches. Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, has officially announced his intention to run for the governorship seat. This declaration sets the stage for a high-profile contest against the incumbent Governor, Peter Mbah. Nnaji, who previously led the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State prior to Mbah’s defection to the party, made his announcement during a consultative workshop with his political supporters.

Nnaji’s entry into the race introduces a new dynamic to the state’s political scene, particularly with his pledge to serve only a single four-year term if elected. His decision is grounded in a respect for Enugu State’s zoning arrangement, which dictates that power should rotate among the three senatorial districts. According to this arrangement, the Enugu West Senatorial District is expected to produce the next governor in 2031. Nnaji emphasized that his commitment to a one-term tenure is intentional and aimed at maintaining political balance and fairness within the state. “I will serve only one term of four years if elected governor in 2027,” he stated. “This decision is based on my deep respect for the zoning structure in Enugu State, which has helped maintain political balance, fairness, and unity among our people over the years.”

In addition to his commitment to a single term, Nnaji expressed his focus on establishing a solid foundation for Enugu’s economic and industrial development during his proposed tenure. He pointed out the state’s untapped economic potential and criticized the years of poor resource management. To ensure continuity beyond his term, he pledged to support the emergence of a capable successor from Enugu West in 2031. Drawing on historical examples, Nnaji referenced the achievements of former Anambra State Governor Jim Nwobodo, who implemented significant projects during his four-year tenure from 1979 to 1983. “Transformational leadership is not about how long you stay in office, but what you are able to do with the time you have,” he remarked.

As the 2027 election approaches, Nnaji’s candidacy and his commitment to the zoning arrangement are poised to influence the political discourse in Enugu State, with potential implications for governance, equity, and long-term development.
