USA Today fires reporter for Twitter comments about Dianna Russini

The situation involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini has led to two job losses. Earlier this week, Russini resigned from The Athletic after photos surfaced of her with Vrabel. This occurred after her employer initiated an investigation, despite having initially supported her. Following Russini’s resignation, Crissy Froyd, a reporter for USA Today, made comments on Twitter regarding the incident. According to the New York Post, USA Today has since terminated its contract with Froyd due to her social media remarks. The publication stated, “USA TODAY Sports has ended its contractor relationship with Crissy Froyd effective immediately. Her recent statements do not reflect our commitment to professionalism or uphold our principles of ethical conduct.”

In response, Froyd issued her own statement to the Post, asserting, “I want to say firstly that I do not regret anything that I said and that I stand behind the fact it is all indeed true. I want to thank USA TODAY SMG for the incredible run I had there for about half of my life. It is deeply, deeply emotional to me that this relationship has come to an end and that my contract has been terminated because of this. I would never say anything I didn’t stand behind because I know the potential consequences, even if a situation seems risky. Thank you to everyone who has supported me both before and after I released my statements.”

While the specific content of Froyd’s remarks about Russini has not been verified or officially reported, Froyd shared the email she received terminating her relationship with USA Today on Twitter. She also stated, “I regret zero of what I said and stand beside it. If you want to talk, my messages are open. My email is operative, too.” Without access to Froyd’s contract with USA Today, it remains unclear whether her Twitter statements provided sufficient grounds for termination or if the publication had the authority to end the contract at any time for any reason. However, it is evident that the termination was related not to Froyd’s work product but rather to her comments about Russini.

This situation underscores the delicate balance between objective facts and unverified information in journalism. As media professionals navigate sensitive topics, discretion and accuracy are crucial, especially in the age of social media, where statements can lead to immediate and significant consequences.
