Kaduna Labour Party calls for unity, reconciliation ahead of congresses

The Labour Party (LP) has suspended 26 senior members, including former state and national leaders, in response to a Supreme Court ruling that removed former national chairman Julius Abure and confirmed the leadership of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee. Among those suspended are Emmanuel Agida, the former chairman of the Benue State chapter; Hilda Doukubo and Eneyi G. Zidougha, former chairmen of Rivers and Bayelsa states, respectively; Dr. Ayo Olurunfemi, the ex-national deputy chairman; and Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, the former Bauchi State chairman. The suspensions also affect several former national and state officials who were aligned with Abure.

The Usman-led Caretaker Committee announced the suspensions on its official X account, stating that the actions were approved by the party’s National Executive Council. This committee is the only leadership structure recognized by the Supreme Court, which, in a unanimous judgment on April 4, 2025, dismissed Abure and nullified a prior Court of Appeal ruling that had upheld his position. In January 2026, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja reinforced the Supreme Court’s decision, formally recognizing Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate national chairman of the party. The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stop recognizing Abure and to acknowledge the Usman-led caretaker committee as the lawful authority until the party’s national convention.

In addition to the aforementioned members, the suspensions include Hon. Lincolin Charles, Ogar Osim, Vincent Okwuokei, Casmir Agbo Uchenna, Simon Zubairu Bamga, Abduljamid Sa’ad Suleiman, Auwala Ahmed, Ularama Jubrila, Grace Zafara Posat, Suleiman Abdurahman Abdul, Ajibade Adekunle Samson, Alexander Emmanuel Ombugu, Elizabeth Ativie, Godwin Jioke, Airen Igbinedion, Osas Frank, Kennedy Ahanotu, Abayomi Arabambi, Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Auwal Tafoki, and Obiora Ifoh. To address the ongoing internal crisis and to elect new national leadership, the Labour Party has scheduled its national convention for Saturday, April 28, 2026.
