Kano State’s political landscape has entered a new phase of uncertainty following a request for the Kano State House of Assembly to suspend any actions regarding the screening of Murtala Garo for the deputy governor position. This request was made in a letter dated April 15, 2026, and signed by Suleiman Mohammed & Co., the solicitors representing Kuliyya Muhammad Salihu and two others. The lawyers informed the Speaker of the Assembly that their clients have filed a lawsuit, referenced as K/360/2026, in the Kano State High Court against the House of Assembly and three other parties. They contend that the matter is currently sub judice, meaning that any legislative action could potentially interfere with the judicial process.
Murtala Garo, along with former speaker Kabiru Rurum and Rabiu Bichi, the managing director of the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, was shortlisted by the Ganduje-Barau APC faction for the deputy governor position. Although Governor Abba Yusuf has not yet submitted a formal nomination, there has been significant lobbying among the candidates. The lawyers have urged the assembly to halt all proceedings related to the deputy governor appointment until the court resolves the ongoing dispute.
The letter, which was also sent to the Clerk of the House, includes a receipt stamp confirming its delivery. This development introduces a new legal dimension to an already tense political stalemate in Kano, where consultations and behind-the-scenes negotiations have intensified. With the case now in the courts, the timeline for filling the vacant deputy governor position remains uncertain, and the assembly’s subsequent actions will likely be influenced by the outcome of the judicial proceedings.
