Character.AI lets you role-play classic books like The Great Gatsby

Character.AI has launched a new feature called Books that allows users to interact with classic literary works through role-playing. The platform, which uses artificial intelligence to simulate conversations with fictional characters, now enables users to step into stories such as The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Frankenstein. Users can alter plots, introduce new characters, or create entirely new scenarios within these public domain texts.

The feature is part of Character.AI’s broader role-playing environment, which supports multimedia interactions including written exchanges, audio, comic strips, and music videos. Users can upload character descriptions and artwork, engage with scenarios designed by others, or interact with established intellectual property.

Despite its creative potential, the platform has faced scrutiny. Lawsuits have alleged that Character.AI’s chatbots were misleading and potentially harmful, with claims linking the service to cases of child suicide. In response, the company has stated that the Books feature is restricted to users aged 18 and over and includes content moderation for material deemed violent, abusive, obscene, or pornographic. Romantic narratives are permitted but must not violate these guidelines.

To test the feature, one user attempted to adapt The Great Gatsby into a queer love story between Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. The AI responded to subtle cues and romantic subtext, though the user found that explicit prompting was often required to advance the narrative. The experience highlighted both the flexibility and the limitations of AI-generated storytelling, with repetitive phrasing and formulaic descriptions detracting from the literary quality of the original works.

The user also explored alternate universes, such as reimagining The Great Gatsby as a musical or altering the fate of characters in Little Women. However, some advanced options required payment or in-app currency.

The experiment raised questions about the nature of the feature, with the user concluding that Books essentially repackages fan fiction—a longstanding tradition in online fandom—into an AI-driven format. While the immediacy and novelty of AI-generated role play may appeal to some, it lacks the depth, style, and human creativity found in traditional fan works.

Character.AI’s move reflects a broader trend of companies leveraging generative AI to engage with fan communities, sometimes at the expense of the human-driven creativity that defines those spaces. As AI tools become more integrated into fandom, concerns persist about their impact on the authenticity and collaborative spirit of fan culture.
