Delta North Senate: Ned Nwoko declares interest, welcomes Okowa into race

As the 2027 general election approaches, political tensions are escalating in the Delta North Senatorial Zone. Two prominent figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) are vying for the seat: Senator Ned Nwoko, the incumbent representative, and former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. This rivalry sets the stage for a fiercely contested race.

Senator Nwoko, a long-standing member of the APC in the state, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving the Delta North constituency. Following Governor Okowa’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year, Nwoko has positioned himself as a key player in the APC. During a recent visit to Asaba International Airport, he was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters, which he interpreted as a testament to the strong bond he shares with the people of Delta North. In his address, Nwoko outlined his plans to advocate for the creation of Anioma State, aligning his vision with that of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He also expressed intentions to upgrade the Federal College of Education in Asaba to a federal university, emphasizing the importance of expanding access to higher education and promoting regional development.

Accompanied by former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, Nwoko pledged to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence in the President’s leadership and ongoing national reforms. He urged constituents to maintain their support for progressive governance, warning against a return to what he referred to as “old politics.”

The entry of Okowa into the race introduces a new dynamic to the contest. While Nwoko has established himself as a significant APC leader in the state, Okowa’s recent switch to the ruling party, alongside the governor, may sway voter sentiment. Given the high-profile nature of both candidates and their contrasting political trajectories, the race is expected to attract considerable attention. With both men firmly entrenched in the APC, the upcoming primary election will be crucial in determining who will represent Delta North in the Senate. The outcome will have significant implications for the political alignment and development agenda of the zone as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
