NBC Warns Broadcasters on Unprofessional Conduct, Code Violations

Nigeria’s broadcasting regulator has issued a stern warning to television stations and presenters, citing a rise in alleged breaches of professional standards across major news platforms. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) disclosed the notice on Friday, emphasizing that it will enforce strict compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly provisions on fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional bodies.

The commission specifically named outlets such as Arise Television and Channels TV, urging them to uphold professionalism when covering sensitive topics including politics, communal conflicts, and war. According to the NBC, broadcasters must avoid expressing personal opinions as facts, bullying or intimidating guests, denying opposing views a fair hearing, or compromising neutrality and human dignity.

The NBC warned that sanctions will be imposed on presenters who violate these standards. The move reflects growing concerns over the tone and conduct of broadcast journalism in Nigeria, where political tensions and social unrest have heightened the stakes for responsible reporting.

Media analysts note that the directive underscores the regulator’s intent to curb what it perceives as unprofessionalism in the industry, while broadcasters face increased scrutiny over their editorial choices. The NBC’s stance signals a broader push to reinforce ethical broadcasting practices amid a volatile media landscape.
