Senegalese Fans Released After AFCON Incident Sentences in Morocco

Three Senegalese football fans detained in Morocco after the Africa Cup of Nations final have been released after serving their three-month sentences.

The supporters were among 18 Senegalese nationals and one French citizen convicted in February for their involvement in violent incidents during the AFCON final in Rabat on 18 January. They faced charges including hooliganism, violence against police, and damage to sports equipment.

The Rabat Court of Appeal upheld the sentences on Monday, with prison terms ranging from three months to one year and fines between €90 and €460. While the three released supporters have completed their sentences, 15 Senegalese fans remain in custody. Their lawyer has indicated he will request a royal pardon.

The legal proceedings stem from a chaotic match between Senegal and Morocco that saw pitch invasions following a contentious penalty decision. Senegal won the game 1-0 in extra time, but the Confederation of African Football later overturned the result, awarding the title to Morocco instead.

The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions between Senegal and Morocco, with Senegal’s prime minister denouncing the jail terms as disproportionate. The case highlights ongoing concerns about crowd control and fan behaviour at major sporting events across Africa.

The release of the three supporters marks the latest development in a controversy that began with the final whistle of the continental championship and has since evolved into an international legal and diplomatic matter.
