In a significant development within Kano State’s political landscape, former Governor and Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His resignation, dated April 19, 2026, was directed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in the Nassarawa Local Government Area and takes immediate effect. In the letter, Shekarau explained that his decision followed “wide and extensive deliberations within my political group” and was motivated by his desire to pursue his political career with a different party.
Although Shekarau did not specify the new party in his resignation, sources close to him indicate that he is likely preparing to join the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which has been gaining momentum in Kano politics. Shekarau, who previously served as Minister of Education under the All Progressives Congress (APC), made headlines in 2022 when he defected to the PDP. His potential return to another party is viewed as part of the ongoing realignments in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
The resignation letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP Chairman and the Nassarawa Local Government Area PDP Chairman, ensuring that formal notification was communicated across party structures. In a gesture of goodwill, Shekarau expressed gratitude to the ward chairman for his leadership and offered prayers for continued guidance.
Political analysts suggest that Shekarau’s departure could have significant repercussions for the PDP’s influence in Kano, a state known for its large voting population and shifting political allegiances. His potential return to the NNPP, where he previously held considerable sway, may strengthen the party’s efforts to consolidate power in the region. As political parties ramp up their preparations for the upcoming elections, Shekarau’s defection highlights the strategic maneuvering that often characterizes major electoral contests in Nigeria.
