The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced plans for a nationwide protest at the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa states on Monday, April 27, 2026. The demonstrations are part of the party’s #AmupitanMustGo campaign, which calls for the removal of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan.
ADC National Youth Leader Balarabe Rufai disclosed the protest plans in a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing flyers for the Lagos and Ogun demonstrations, both titled “Operation Occupy INEC.” According to Rufai, the Lagos protest will commence at Yaba College of Technology, while the Ogun protest is scheduled to take place at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited office in Abeokuta.
The planned protests follow a similar demonstration in Abuja on April 8, 2026, where prominent opposition figures staged an “Occupy INEC” protest. Participants in the Abuja protest included former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Dino Melaye.
The ADC’s action underscores growing tensions between opposition parties and the electoral commission ahead of upcoming elections. The party has not provided specific details on the grounds for demanding Amupitan’s removal, but the timing suggests dissatisfaction with the commission’s handling of recent electoral processes.
INEC has not yet issued an official response to the planned protests. Security agencies are expected to monitor the demonstrations to ensure they remain peaceful and do not disrupt public order.
