Sharon Adeleke Says Davido Introduced Flashy Lifestyle to Nigerian Music Industry

Davido’s sister, Sharon Adeleke, has credited the Afrobeats star with introducing a culture of luxury and flamboyance into the Nigerian music scene. Speaking during a special Apple Radio live takeover to mark Davido’s 15th anniversary in the music industry, Sharon said her brother was among the first Nigerian musicians to make showing off wealth and success fashionable.

“He’s one of the people that started all this being flashy and showing off and making it cool in Nigeria,” Sharon said during the broadcast, which featured family and friends celebrating Davido’s career milestone.

Davido himself acknowledged the influence of earlier acts while highlighting the evolution of artist culture in Nigeria. “When we came to Nigeria, Mo’Hits did it with having a crew, but you see how in America, every successful musician has a crew, his guys and all that,” he said. Sharon quickly interjected, insisting, “You brought that. Nobody used to do that.”

The singer has previously spoken about how the now-defunct Mo’Hits Records, led by Don Jazzy and D’banj, inspired his musical journey. In past interviews, Davido revealed that he spent time at the Mo’Hits mansion after leaving home to pursue music against his father’s wishes.

The conversation sheds light on how Davido has influenced not just music but also the broader culture of Nigerian entertainment, where displays of wealth and strong personal branding have become increasingly prominent. His approach has helped shape the modern image of success in Afrobeats, blending musical achievement with a lifestyle that commands global attention.

This cultural shift, as noted by his sister, reflects Davido’s impact beyond chart-topping hits, positioning him as a key figure in redefining the public persona of Nigerian artists on the international stage.
