A new chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State, Festus Onyekwulisi, has taken office with a bold promise: the party will unseat Governor Hope Uzodimma in the next election. Speaking to journalists on Friday at the party secretariat in Owerri, Onyekwulisi said he and the state working committee will ensure that the party’s governorship primary in April is credible. He also pledged to protect the party’s votes in the House of Assembly election scheduled for March 18.

Describing the Labour Party as a movement, Onyekwulisi argued that transparency in the primary election is the best way to win the November governorship race. He noted that the people of Imo have suffered and asserted that the Labour Party administration will help them reap the dividends of democracy once again. “We have begun the process of recovering Imo State. The first step is to hold a transparent primary election. Transparency will be our watchword,” he said.

Onyekwulisi emphasized that the party is neither a stooge nor factionalised. “We are committed to a new Imo State. The Labour Party administration will bring the dividends of democracy to the Imo people. We are men and women of proven integrity, modeled after Peter Obi. We are here to do what is right. I am only a stooge to my conscience.”
