Laureus World Sports Awards 2025: Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka Win Top Honors

Madrid hosted the Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday, bringing together some of the biggest names in global sport. The ceremony, co-hosted by tennis legend Novak Djokovic and freestyle skier Eileen Gu—both former Laureus winners—celebrated outstanding athletic achievements over the past year.

Tennis dominated the top honours, with Carlos Alcaraz named World Sportsman of the Year and Aryna Sabalenka taking World Sportswoman of the Year. Both finished 2024 as the world number ones in their respective singles categories, underscoring their dominance on the court.

Paris Saint-Germain claimed the Laureus World Team of the Year Award after securing six major trophies across European and domestic competitions. In football’s youth category, 18-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was recognised as Young Sportsperson of the Year, capping a breakthrough season that has already seen him become a key figure for club and country.

British-Belgian Formula One driver Lando Norris received the Breakthrough of the Year award following his maiden Grand Prix victory and first world championship title. In Paralympic sport, three-time world champion para swimmer Gabriel Arrais earned his first Laureus honour, while snowboarder Chloe Kim secured her third, reinforcing her status among the sport’s all-time greats.

The awards ceremony coincided with the start of the Madrid Open tennis tournament and came five months before Formula One returns to the Spanish capital for the first time in decades, adding to the city’s sporting calendar.

The Laureus Awards, established to honour sporting excellence and the power of sport to drive social change, continue to highlight athletes whose performances inspire on and off the field.
