Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo agreed to upgrade bilateral ties to a China-Mozambique community with a shared future in the new era following talks in Beijing on Tuesday.
The two leaders emphasized the longstanding mutual trust and support between their nations since establishing diplomatic relations. President Xi noted that deepening cooperation aligns with the common aspirations of both peoples and supports the broader trend of South-South cooperation.
Xi said China is ready to use the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges as opportunities to advance shared modernization goals. He called for stronger coordination on core interests, intensified exchanges between governments, political parties, legislatures, and at sub-national levels, and increased sharing of governance experience.
Highlighting the high economic complementarity between the two countries, Xi said China is willing to align development strategies, innovate cooperation models, and explore new avenues in infrastructure, energy, and mineral development. He also identified agriculture, new energy, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence as potential growth drivers.
On the global stage, Xi said both countries should strengthen coordination within the United Nations and other organizations, advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world, and promote universally beneficial economic globalization. He noted that China stands ready to work with Africa to address spillover effects from regional conflicts and to jointly promote peace and development.
President Chapo described China as a true friend that has provided selfless support to Mozambique. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed readiness to deepen cooperation in economy, trade, agriculture, and energy. Chapo said the implementation of FOCAC outcomes and China’s zero-tariff policies for African countries will significantly aid African economic and social development.
Following the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of more than 20 cooperation documents covering Belt and Road cooperation, the Global Security Initiative, economy and trade, people-to-people exchanges, healthcare, and media. They also issued a joint statement on building a China-Mozambique community with a shared future in the new era.
Later on Tuesday evening, President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a welcome banquet for President Chapo and his wife Gueta Selemane Chapo at the Great Hall of the People.
