Kano Governor Nominates Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor. The nomination, announced in a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, follows the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27.

The appointment is in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants the Governor authority to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists. Governor Yusuf has requested the Assembly to expedite the necessary approval after consultations with key stakeholders.

Murtala Sule Garo, 48, brings over two decades of experience in political administration, having served in both elective and appointed roles. His career includes positions such as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government. He has also chaired the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano, served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.

The Governor’s nomination of Garo is part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and ensure effective service delivery in Kano State. The State House of Assembly is expected to deliberate on the nomination in line with constitutional provisions.
