US Mission Warns Nigeria: Visa Overstays Threaten Access

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria issued a warning on Monday that visa overstays by Nigerian travelers could jeopardise future visa opportunities for other applicants. In a statement posted on the embassy’s X account, officials emphasized the importance of complying with U.S. immigration rules and warned that violations may have broader consequences for students, business travelers and families seeking entry to the United States.

The advisory noted that “visa overstays by Nigerian travelers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” and that “strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travelers, and families who travel responsibly.” It added that visa fraud and the misuse of travel documentation remain serious concerns and urged all visa holders to respect the conditions of their stay.

The embassy called on the public to help safeguard the integrity of the visa system. Individuals with credible information about visa fraud are asked to report it through the official consular fraud‑prevention channels at AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.

While highlighting the need for vigilance, the mission stressed that law‑abiding travelers should not be disadvantaged by the actions of a few. The statement reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting safe, legal and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States.

The warning follows a broader effort by U.S. diplomatic missions to curb immigration violations and ensure that visa programmes remain accessible to eligible applicants. Officials indicated that continued cooperation from the Nigerian public will be essential in maintaining the credibility of the visa process and preventing future restrictions.

For further information, travelers are advised to consult the U.S. Embassy’s website or contact the consular sections in Abuja and Lagos.
