NBA President Urges Young Lawyers to Lead with Integrity

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, urged young legal practitioners to pursue leadership with intention, integrity and a clear sense of responsibility during his speech at the NBA Young Lawyers’ Forum national summit on 23 April 2026. Addressing a gathering of early‑career lawyers from across Nigeria, Osigwe warned that the profession’s future depends on the readiness of this new cohort to embrace ethical and service‑oriented leadership.

The summit marked the 20th anniversary of the Young Lawyers’ Forum, a platform that has historically mentored and shaped emerging lawyers. Speaking on the theme “Rising to Lead,” Osigwe highlighted the Forum’s role as a steady pipeline of future legal leaders. He praised its contributions to capacity‑building but emphasized that leadership must extend beyond titles. “Leadership within the Bar must be intentional, guided by integrity and driven by a commitment to service,” he said.

Osigwe stressed that leadership is earned through consistent effort, discipline and tangible impact rather than being a position to occupy. He cautioned participants against treating leadership as a mere accolade, urging them to anchor their advancement in competence, ethical conduct and public service.

The NBA president also drew attention to the evolving landscape of legal practice. He noted that technological advancements and shifting socio‑economic conditions require lawyers to remain adaptable and forward‑thinking. “Resilience and innovation are no longer optional, but essential tools for navigating the modern legal environment,” Osigwe asserted.

To support this transition, Osigwe called on young lawyers to utilise mentorship programmes and professional development opportunities offered by the NBA and its affiliates. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the Young Lawyers’ Forum as a critical pillar for strengthening the profession and preparing leaders who can contribute to national development.

The address concludes with a clear message: young lawyers should lead with purpose rather than seek position, ensuring that the Nigerian legal profession remains robust, ethical and responsive to contemporary challenges.
