APC Nasarawa Aspirant Says Ward Executives Hijack Primaries

Lafia, Nasarawa State – Former Inspector General of Police and All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial aspirant Mohammed Adamu Abubakar has accused the state party leadership of plotting to manipulate the upcoming 2027 primary elections by pressuring ward executives across Nasarawa’s 147 wards.

Speaking through Isah Nathaniel, chairman of the campaign’s Counter and Mobilisation committee, Abubakar said the alleged scheme aims to force ward executives to back a predetermined candidate, describing it as “political manipulation in its crudest form” rather than legitimate coordination. He warned that such interference threatens party cohesion and could jeopardise the APC’s prospects in the 2027 elections, especially as stakeholders have agreed to adopt direct primaries for all elective positions.

The accusation surfaced hours after APC State Chairman Dr Aliyu Bello affirmed the party’s commitment to a level playing field for all aspirants. Bello reiterated that while Governor Abdul‑Rahman Sule may endorse a preferred candidate, that endorsement cannot preclude other contenders from contesting.

Abubakar appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee for immediate intervention to halt what he termed “unfolding illegality” and to restore constitutional order within the state party. He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to remain vigilant against any coercive tactics that could undermine public peace and the integrity of the primary process.

The APC has pledged to ensure a free and fair primary election, emphasizing adherence to internal rules and the established direct‑primary system. Stakeholders are expected to monitor the developments closely as the party prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle.
