Abuja – Leke Abejide, the House of Representatives member for Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State, formally resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Friday, announcing his departure at a press conference in the capital.
Abejide, who had risen through the party ranks and served as national leader, was expelled by the faction led by former Senate President David Mark during the ADC’s national convention on 14 April 2026. Following the expulsion, the lawmaker said he chose to leave the party to protect his political future.
In his statement, Abejide highlighted his role in building the ADC’s national profile: “I joined ADC, nurtured it to national recognition as a political party with representation in both national and state assemblies. The party structure was funded by me as the then national leader of the party, which I have willingly relinquished to the current national chairman, Honourable Nafiu Bala Gombe.” He wished Gombe success in ongoing court proceedings concerning the party’s leadership.
Abejide added that he intends to join a political organization with a stronger structure that can better serve his constituents: “I have decided to change the broken bricks in the ADC and become a cornerstone in a better political party with a strong structure that will benefit my people.”
The resignation comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reinstated David Mark as ADC national chairman, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court after a protracted leadership dispute. Abejide’s legal counsel advised him to exit the party amid the crisis, a recommendation he acted upon.
When asked about his next political affiliation, Abejide declined to specify, indicating that he will disclose his new platform once formalities are completed. “You will know any moment from now where I am heading to. Maybe by the time I obtain my form, it will be clear to you,” he said.
The lawmaker’s departure adds another layer to the ADC’s internal turmoil and may influence the party’s performance ahead of upcoming elections. Observers will watch for Abejide’s next move, which could reshape political alignments in Kogi State and beyond.
