Kano, Nigeria – The 16th Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, elevated six traditional title‑holders during a turbaning ceremony at his Kofar Kudu palace on Friday. The promotions, the Emir said, were based on the individuals’ merit and their contributions to the Emirate and broader society.
Speaking to assembled traditional leaders, business representatives, political figures, academics and well‑wishers, Emir Sanusi urged the newly appointed title‑holders to act as ambassadors of the Emirate, setting high standards of leadership and service. He emphasized the need for them to live up to the confidence placed in them and to foster peace, security, education and health‑care initiatives within their jurisdictions.
In their separate votes of thanks, Alhaji Mujitapha Abubakar‑Abba, the new Dokajin Kano and district head of Darmanawa, and Ambassador Ahmad Umar, promoted to Sarkin Yakin Kano, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. Both pledged to perform their duties with seriousness and called on their constituencies for cooperation and support.
The ceremony also saw Alhaji Aliyu Muhammad‑Wudil elevated from Dokajin Kano to Sarkin Sudan, Alhaji Mujitapha Abubakar‑Abba promoted from Sarkin Yakin to Dokajin Kano, and Ambassador Ahmed Umar advanced from Jarman Kano to Sarkin Yakin Kano. Additional honorees included Alhaji Shafiu Ahmad as Talban Kano, Alhaji Jafar Khalil‑Muhammad as Jarman Kano, and Sanusi Bello as Ajiyan Kano.
The event was notable for the wide attendance of traditional authorities, members of the business community, political affiliates, academic figures, family members and friends, underscoring the Emirate’s role in regional governance and social development. The newly appointed leaders are expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to improve public services and humanitarian outcomes across the Kano Emirate.
