Dr. Job Obwaka Death: Cardiac Arrest, Poisoning Probe

Nairobi – A post‑mortem examination has confirmed that Dr. Job Obwaka, a veteran obstetrician‑gynecologist and board member of The Nairobi Hospital, died of cardiac arrest. The autopsy report, released by family spokesperson Joseph Ndungu, stated that cardiac arrest was the immediate cause of death, providing clarification after the doctor’s sudden collapse.

While the primary cause of death has been established, authorities indicated that additional medical examinations may be undertaken if further information is required.

The findings were released as detectives expanded their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Obwaka’s death. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) informed a Nairobi court that preliminary evidence suggests a possible poisoning incident at the home of 45‑year‑old Beatrice Wangari in Kitengela. Wangari, who is being treated as a person of interest, was arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts after spending the weekend in police custody. She is reported to be the last person seen with the 83‑year‑old physician before he collapsed.

Prosecutors have asked the court for a 14‑day extension to complete inquiries, which will include further post‑mortem work and toxicological analysis. “Certain samples are to be forwarded to the government analyst for additional testing, which may include two separate examinations and possibly a mental‑assessment examination,” the prosecutor said.

In an affidavit, the investigating officer noted that samples collected from Wangari’s residence in Milimani Estate will undergo forensic testing to determine whether poisoning occurred. Wangari’s defence team, however, rejected the allegations, arguing that police searches of the premises yielded no evidence of toxins. “Your Honor, as we speak, she is not even a suspect before this court. Yet she has already been detained for three days, and the prosecution seeks 14 more days to hold an innocent woman whose only involvement was assisting the doctor after his collapse,” her lawyer told the court.

The defence further described the affidavit as “full of innuendos, alarmism and sensationalism,” contending that the accusations lack factual basis.

The case remains under active investigation. The autopsy confirms cardiac arrest as the medical cause of death, but the ongoing forensic and toxicological examinations will determine whether foul play contributed to Dr. Obwaka’s demise. Updates are expected as the DCI completes its analysis and the court considers the requested extension.
