The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, addressed rumours on Wednesday that former Senator Okey Chinda had secured nomination forms to contest the 2023 Rivers State governorship election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. In a televised media briefing, Wike neither confirmed nor denied Chinda’s alleged intention to run, but affirmed that the PDP in Rivers State remains committed to participating in the forthcoming election.
Wike’s comments came after reports emerged that Chinda, a former Minister of State for Education and long‑time PDP stalwart, had obtained the necessary forms to vie for the governorship. When asked directly about the claim, the minister said the party’s internal processes would determine its candidates and that he would not comment on individual aspirations at that stage.
The minister also responded to speculation surrounding Dax George‑Kelly, who is reported to have secured a nomination form from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike identified George‑Kelly as a member of the Rainbow Coalition – an alliance of opposition parties in Rivers State. He noted that the coalition would collectively decide on a single candidate to support when the time comes, emphasizing the need for unity among opposition groups.
The Rivers State election, scheduled for 18 March 2023, is viewed as a critical contest in Nigeria’s political landscape. The PDP, which has governed the state for several terms, is expected to field a strong candidate, while the APC and smaller parties aim to capitalize on any internal divisions within the ruling party. The emergence of high‑profile figures such as Chinda and George‑Kelly could reshape the dynamics of the race, potentially influencing party alliances and voter sentiment.
Political observers note that the timing of the nominations is significant, as parties are expected to finalize their tickets in the coming weeks ahead of the governorship primaries. The Federal Capital Territory Ministry’s acknowledgment of the Rainbow Coalition’s role highlights the growing coordination among opposition forces seeking to challenge the incumbent PDP structure in the state.
As the election approaches, party officials and candidates are expected to intensify campaigning and stakeholder engagement across Rivers. The outcomes will not only determine the state’s leadership but also have implications for the balance of power between the PDP and APC at the national level. Further updates are anticipated as parties confirm their candidates and formalize campaign strategies.
