Despite Obi's exit, Anambra ADC members stick with David Mark leadership

The Anambra State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly reaffirmed its loyalty to the party’s national leadership, despite the recent departure of former presidential candidate Peter Obi to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The declaration was made after a consultative meeting of ADC leaders in Awka, the state capital, where the group reviewed its position ahead of upcoming elections. Dr Ndubuisi Nwobu, ADC’s deputy‑governorship candidate in the November 2025 gubernatorial race, told journalists that the state chapter had resolved to remain within the ADC and to work toward the party’s success in future contests.

“The state leaders of our party have reaffirmed the loyalty and support of the ADC Anambra State chapter to the national leadership headed by Senator David Mark and His Excellency Rauf Aregbesola,” Nwobu said. “We also commend the founding chairman and former national chairman, our brother Ralph Nwosu, for presenting the ADC platform as an umbrella body for the coalition and for his selfless role in navigating the coalition to its fruition.”

Nwobu acknowledged that Obi’s exit, along with some of his supporters, had caused disappointment among ADC members in Anambra. Nevertheless, he expressed goodwill toward those who have left, stating that the party hopes they will eventually return to a united effort to address Nigeria’s leadership challenges.

“ADC’s birth is from Anambra State, and Anambra will not be found wanting,” he added. “It is in the interest of the party to achieve success in the 2027 general elections. As for our brothers who have moved on to other platforms, we wish them well and look forward to a day they will join us to rescue this country.”

The ADC, founded in 2005, has positioned itself as a coalition platform seeking to attract diverse political actors. The party’s national leadership, under Senator David Mark and former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, continues to emphasize unity and a broad-based agenda ahead of the 2027 elections. The Anambra chapter’s reaffirmation of support underscores the party’s effort to maintain cohesion despite recent defections.

The meeting’s outcomes suggest that the ADC will continue to field candidates in forthcoming state and national elections, while monitoring the impact of recent realignments on its electoral prospects.
