2027: Showdown in Abia as ex-govs regroup against Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti received free Labour Party nomination forms from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Friday, a gesture presented during a brief ceremony at the Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The ceremony was led by Labour Party National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, who spoke on behalf of the NWC delegation. Usman praised Otti as “the poster boy of the Labour Party,” citing his implementation of the party’s principles of equal opportunity and social justice in Abia State. She noted that the complimentary nomination forms recognized the governor’s “outstanding performance in office” and were intended to encourage continued quality governance.

National Secretary Hon. Obioma Iheanacho thanked Otti for his “steadfast faith and commitment” to the party, emphasizing his loyalty despite internal challenges that had led some members to defect to other political platforms. Iheanacho highlighted the governor’s consistent approach to both politics and administration.

In response, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the NWC for the honour, affirming that he would not take the gesture lightly. He pledged not to disappoint the party and vowed to support it in every possible way. Otti also commended Senator Usman for her leadership in navigating the party out of a prolonged internal crisis and indicated confidence that the Labour Party is now positioned to contest the upcoming general elections without legal hindrance.

Senator Usman was accompanied by National Organising Secretary Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, National Woman Leader Hilda Dokubo, and National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa. Also in attendance were former National Secretary Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who received a free nomination form alongside Otti, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, caucus leader of Abia State members in the House of Representatives, and members of the Abia State Executive Council.

The presentation underscores the Labour Party’s effort to consolidate support among incumbent officials ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling an attempt to resolve previous legal disputes and internal divisions that had hampered its electoral prospects.
