Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced a scheduled power outage affecting several districts of Nigeria’s capital on Saturday and Sunday, following a request from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The interruption is linked to road‑construction activities that require the relocation of key electrical infrastructure.
The utility posted the notice on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, confirming that the outage will impact Lugbe, Airport Road, Gaduwa and adjoining communities. AEDC explained that the temporary loss of supply is necessary to move critical assets attached to the 33 kV feeders H21 and H23, as well as the 11 kV feeder H1A, all situated within the Gaduwa district.
The relocation work is part of broader road‑improvement projects being carried out in the public interest. According to AEDC, electricity service to the affected areas will remain offline for the duration of the work and will be restored once the relocation is completed.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding,” the company said in its statement.
The two‑day outage underscores the challenges of coordinating essential utilities with urban development initiatives in fast‑growing cities. Residents and businesses in the affected zones are advised to make alternative power arrangements and to stay informed of any updates from AEDC or the FCDA. The utility has not indicated any changes to the schedule, and restoration is expected promptly after the infrastructure work concludes.
