Republic of Congo president holds talks with his Russian counterpart

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso at the Kremlin on Wednesday to discuss the development of bilateral relations between Russia and the Republic of Congo.

During the talks, Putin highlighted a range of “promising” opportunities for cooperation, focusing primarily on economic sectors such as geological exploration, energy, logistics and agriculture. He noted that the stable political environment in Congo provides favourable conditions for investment and joint projects.

Sassou Nguesso, who was re‑elected to a fifth term last month, received congratulations from Putin. The Congolese leader said that “all the conditions” are now in place to implement collaborative initiatives across a variety of fields. He affirmed the long‑standing friendship, solidarity and cooperation that exist between the two countries, including security, defence and economic ties.

The election that returned Sassou Nguesso to power was marked by a weak field of challengers, the imprisonment of two prominent opposition figures and the exile of several others. Opposition parties largely boycotted the vote, which the official results put at nearly 95 percent in favour of the incumbent. Critics described the process as lacking credibility.

In addition to economic matters, Putin praised Congo’s support for Russian positions in international fora and extended an invitation to Sassou Nguesso to attend the third Russia‑Africa Forum, slated for later this year. The forum is expected to bring together African heads of state, business leaders and Russian officials to discuss trade, investment and security cooperation.

The meeting underscores Moscow’s broader strategy of strengthening ties with African nations. Over the past decade, Russia has expanded its presence on the continent through arms sales, energy projects and diplomatic outreach. For the Republic of Congo, a country rich in natural resources but facing fiscal constraints, the prospect of Russian partnership offers an avenue for infrastructure development and diversification of its economy.

Both leaders agreed to continue dialogue and to explore concrete projects in the sectors identified. Follow‑up mechanisms are to be established through the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Congo’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Promotion.

The Kremlin‑Brazzaville talks signal a deepening of Russia‑Congo relations at a time when both countries seek to broaden their international partnerships and attract foreign investment. The upcoming Russia‑Africa Forum will likely serve as a platform to translate the discussions into actionable agreements.
