Cade Klubnik is undeterred by slide to round four

Former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik entered the 2025 NFL Draft with a markedly reduced profile after a senior season marred by injuries and inconsistent play. Once projected as a first‑round talent, the right‑handed passer fell to the fourth round, where the New York Jets selected him after trading up to secure his rights.

Klubnik, who was the starter for Clemson during a campaign that began 3‑5 before finishing 7‑6, described his college experience as “a tough place to be.” He cited the disappointment of not meeting the high expectations set by a roster returning 19 starters and highlighted the physical setbacks he endured, including a lingering ankle injury that forced him to use an elevator instead of stairs and a wrist problem that limited his availability.

Despite the setbacks, Klubnik emphasized a resilient mindset. “In my mind, I’m a winner,” he told reporters, according to ESPN reporter Rich Cimini. “I don’t mean that in a boastful way. That’s the mentality you have to have as a quarterback, and my résumé shows that as well.” He added that the challenges taught him to confront adversity directly.

At the Jets’ rookie minicamp, Klubnik assumed a leadership role, organizing teammates for walk‑through sessions in the hotel lobby on Thursday and Friday evenings. “There’s not really anything else to do but study the ball, so let’s get together, walk through a few routes,” he said.

The quarterback’s immediate future with New York is uncertain. Current starter Geno Smith is expected to remain the short‑term option, while Klubnik will compete for limited repetitions during the offseason program, training camp, and preseason. The Jets’ coaching staff will evaluate his development and readiness to potentially assume a larger role in the offense.

Klubnik’s transition from a once‑high‑valued college prospect to a fourth‑round selection underscores the volatility of NFL draft projections. His performance in the coming months will determine whether he can translate his collegiate experience and leadership qualities into a meaningful role for the Jets, offering the franchise a potential long‑term option at quarterback.
