A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 bound for (destination) aborted its take‑off from Denver International Airport (DEN) after striking an individual who had entered the runway without authorization. The collision occurred at approximately 23:19 local time on 9 May 2026, two minutes after the person breached the perimeter fence.

According to airport officials, the trespasser was on the runway when the aircraft began its take‑off roll. The jet’s first‑stage engine suffered catastrophic damage, and the turbine ingested the individual, resulting in a fatal injury. The flight crew immediately reported the incident to air traffic control, stating that the aircraft had “hit somebody” and that an engine fire had ensued. Air traffic controllers subsequently declared the runway closed and confirmed the presence of a deceased person on the surface.

The aircraft, an Airbus A321‑200, came to a stop on the runway. Smoke filled the cabin, prompting the crew to initiate an emergency evacuation using the aircraft’s slides. All 224 occupants—12 crew members and 212 passengers—evacuated the plane. Twelve passengers sustained minor injuries; five required hospital treatment, while the remainder were treated at the scene and released.

Video footage captured by passengers and bystanders showed the moment of impact and the subsequent evacuation. One witness reported that the jet briefly lifted off before returning to the ground after striking the runway obstruction. The damaged engine’s fan blades were visible in the recordings, corroborating the report that the individual had been drawn into the turbine.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the incident in a post on X, reminding the public that “no one should EVER trespass on an airport.” Airport police are reviewing security footage to determine how the individual accessed the airfield and to assess any potential gaps in perimeter security.

DEN is one of the nation’s busiest airports, handling over 65 million passengers annually. The runway involved is a primary take‑off and landing surface for both domestic and international flights. Following the accident, FAA investigators and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been dispatched to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and analyze the aircraft’s data recorders. The investigation will focus on runway security, the aircraft’s performance during the emergency, and the effectiveness of the crew’s response.

Airlines operating from Denver have been advised to review their emergency procedures, and the airport has temporarily rerouted traffic to alternate runways while repairs are undertaken. The incident underscores the critical importance of strict access control at airports and the need for rapid response protocols in the event of runway intrusions.
