Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara arrived at the Plateau State Government House Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, on Sunday to undergo the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship screening ahead of the 2027 election. The screening, which is mandatory for incumbent governors seeking re‑election under the party’s banner, will be conducted by the APC Governorship Screening Committee chaired by National Chairman Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda.
Fubara’s appearance follows the APC’s internal timetable for vetting sitting governors. The committee will assess candidates’ eligibility, performance and adherence to party guidelines before endorsing them for the upcoming gubernatorial race. The outcome will determine whether the incumbent can contest the 2027 poll on the APC ticket.
In a related development, Martins Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, also presented himself before the APC House of Representatives screening committee on Sunday. Amaewhule’s participation signals the broader effort by the party to clear its legislative candidates for the forthcoming general elections.
The APC’s screening process forms part of its broader candidate selection framework, which includes background checks, interviews and review of public service records. Candidates who pass the screening are expected to receive the party’s official nomination, while those who do not may be required to withdraw or seek alternative platforms.
The screenings come at a crucial juncture as the APC prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle, which will see contests for presidential, gubernatorial, legislative and local government positions across Nigeria. Successful completion of the screening will enable Fubara and Amaewhule to focus on campaign strategies and voter outreach ahead of the elections.
Stakeholders will be watching the results closely, as the endorsement of incumbent governors and key legislators can influence the party’s performance in key states such as Rivers. The APC is expected to announce the final list of approved candidates in the coming weeks, after all screenings are concluded.
