Transfer: Coventry City favourites to sign Onyeka

Frank Onyeka has been shortlisted for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for April, according to the latest nomination list released by the league. The Coventry City midfielder’s performances over the past month have been highlighted as a key factor in the club’s successful promotion campaign.

During April, Onyeka featured in three league matches for the Sky Blues, providing an assist and helping to maintain the team’s defensive discipline in midfield. His contribution came in the form of a decisive pass to Ephron Mason‑Clark in stoppage time, which completed Coventry’s third goal in a hard‑fought victory. The 28‑year‑old’s overall tally for the season stands at one goal and one assist from 14 Championship appearances since joining the club on loan from Brentford in January.

Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League was secured in May after a series of strong results, and Onyeka’s steady presence in the midfield has been credited with adding balance to a side that relied heavily on its attacking outlets. Manager Frank Lampard, who brought the midfielder to the club, praised his work ethic and adaptability, noting that Onyeka’s ability to shield the back line while contributing to forward play has been instrumental in the team’s upward trajectory.

Alongside Onyeka, the shortlist includes several other standout performers from the division: Ipswich Town goalkeeper Christian Walton, Portsmouth forward Adrian Segečić, Wrexham striker Josh Windass, Norwich City midfielder Mohamed Touré and Swansea City winger Žan Vipotnik. Each of the nominees has recorded notable statistical contributions over the same period, intensifying the competition for the monthly honour.

The Player of the Month award, decided by a combination of league voting and fan input, will be announced later this week. Should Onyeka secure the accolade, it would mark his first individual award at Championship level and underscore the impact that loan players can have on a promotion push. Regardless of the outcome, his performances have already cemented his reputation as a reliable midfield option and could influence Coventry’s squad planning ahead of their return to the Premier League.
