Xi tells Trump U.S.-China relations ‘most important in the world’ — Daily Nigerian

Beijing – Chinese President Xi Jinping used a state banquet on Thursday to underscore the strategic importance of the China‑United States relationship, describing it as “the most important bilateral relationship in the world.” Speaking in the Great Hall of the People as he toasted visiting U.S. President Donald Trump, Xi called for the two powers to act as partners rather than rivals.

Trump echoed the sentiment, highlighting common values shared by the American and Chinese peoples. “We value hard work, courage and achievement,” he said. “We love our families and we love our countries – together.” He added that these shared principles could be harnessed to build a future of greater prosperity, cooperation, and peace for the next generation.

The banquet marked the conclusion of Trump’s first day in Beijing. The two leaders are scheduled to resume talks on Friday before Trump departs for the United States. During the visit, Trump extended an invitation for Xi to visit Washington on 24 September, a meeting that U.S. officials have previously signalled but had not yet dated.

Both presidents used the occasion to stress the need for constructive engagement amid a climate of heightened U.S.–China competition. Their remarks suggest a willingness to explore diplomatic avenues that could mitigate tensions over trade, technology, and regional security, while seeking areas of mutual benefit.

As the dialogue moves forward, African nations and regional partners will be watching closely. China remains a major source of investment and trade across the continent, while the United States continues to pursue strategic interests in Africa. The tone set by Xi and Trump may influence the broader geopolitical environment in which African economies operate, affecting everything from infrastructure financing to market access.

Further developments are expected after Friday’s discussions, which could shape the trajectory of Sino‑American relations and, by extension, their economic and political interactions with Africa.
