Oyo terrorist attack: IGP Disu visits communities, orders intensified rescue operation

The Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, travelled to Oyo State on Friday after the deadly attack and abduction that took place in the early hours of 15 May in Oriire Local Government Area. The incident, which left several people dead and a number of residents missing, prompted an immediate response from senior police officials.

Accompanying the IGP were Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekimi — dispatched because the Oriire axis borders communities in Kwara — and CP Abayomi Shogunle, head of the Schools Protection Squad. The delegation met with CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, and other security stakeholders for an operational briefing on rescue efforts and security deployments in the affected localities.

The IGP expressed deep concern over the tragedy and offered condolences to the families of the victims. He condemned the attack as “cruel and unacceptable” and pledged that all available resources would be mobilised to restore normalcy. Disu assured residents, parents and guardians that the Nigeria Police Force, working with other security agencies, had intensified coordinated search‑and‑rescue operations, intelligence gathering and tactical deployments aimed at locating the abducted victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

In addition to the existing response, the Inspector‑General ordered the deployment of extra tactical and intelligence assets to strengthen operations in the immediate area and in adjoining forested zones, which are believed to be used by the attackers. He emphasised that no effort would be spared in securing the safe return of those taken and in reinforcing security for communities along the Oyo‑Kwara border.

The visit underscores the federal police’s commitment to rapid intervention in crisis situations and highlights inter‑state cooperation in confronting cross‑border security threats. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as rescue operations progress and investigations into the attack continue.
