The police in India have arrested two Nigerians, identified as Alex, 30, and Ibeh, 45, for allegedly cheating several Indian women through matrimonial applications. According to the police, the suspects posed as marine engineers and wealthy IT professionals to lure women on the app and then extorted money from them by claiming they needed to clear customs fees for gifts.
Indian authorities said the scheme came to light when a 24‑year‑old woman from the President Estate area reported a loss of Rs 4 lakh. A senior police officer explained that the victim had met a man named Aman Arora on a matrimonial site. He claimed to be a marine engineer based in the UK, and after communicating on WhatsApp, he told her he would travel to Mumbai to meet her.
Investigators revealed that Alex and Ibeh had been cheating women for months under the pretense of sending and receiving gifts. The men were part of a larger network that included other Nigerian gang members and had defrauded multiple women. Police are now conducting searches and analyzing the suspects’ phones to identify additional victims.
