Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command rescued journalist Oduneye Olusegun, who had been abducted by gunmen in the Mobalufon area of Ijebu Ode. The kidnapping occurred on Thursday, and the journalist was recovered three days later, on Saturday, in Lagos. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed the details in a statement on Monday.
According to Oyeyemi, the abductors called the victim’s wife the following morning and demanded a ransom of N30 million. In response, Commissioner of Police Frank Mba ordered the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Obalende, SP Murphy Salami—whose jurisdiction covered the incident—to ensure the victim’s safe rescue. Acting on the commissioner’s directive, the DPO mobilised detectives and launched a technical, intelligence‑based investigation.
Their efforts succeeded when the kidnappers’ Toyota Camry, in which the victim was being held, was traced to the Idimu area of Lagos. There, the kidnappers were waiting for the ransom. Upon sighting the police, the gunmen opened fire, leading to a 45‑minute shootout. The assailants eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled after sustaining various gunshot injuries. The car was found soaked with blood from the exchange, but the victim emerged unhurt.
The police public relations officer noted that Commissioner Mba praised his officers for their gallantry and professionalism. He appealed to the public—particularly hospitals and traditional healers—to report any individuals with gunshot injuries they encounter. The commissioner also warned criminals to stay away from Ogun State, emphasizing that the police command is ready to confront them wherever they may hide.
