A three‑year‑old girl in Houston, Texas, accidentally shot and killed her four‑year‑old sister after finding a loaded semi‑automatic pistol in their apartment. The tragedy occurred on Sunday, March 12, at about 8 p.m., while the parents had friends over and the children were left unattended.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the two girls were alone in a bedroom because one parent assumed the other was watching them. Five adults – family members and friends, including the parents – were present in the apartment on Bammel North Houston Road. The three‑year‑old discovered the firearm, fired a single shot, and struck her sister. The adults rushed into the room, found the four‑year‑old unresponsive, secured the gun and called 911. The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Gonzalez called the incident “another tragic story of a child gaining access to a firearm and hurting someone else,” emphasizing that it was a preventable gun death. He expressed the department’s heartbreak and noted that deputies were shaken, with support personnel dispatched to assist officers and family members. “The community is impacted when a child loses their life in this way,” he said, urging responsible gun ownership and secure storage beyond merely telling children not to touch weapons.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether any adults face charges after the preliminary police investigation.
Advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety reported that, in 2023, there have been at least 58 unintentional shootings by children in the United States, resulting in 22 deaths and 37 injuries. In 2022, the numbers were higher, with at least 353 unintentional child‑involved shootings, causing 156 deaths and 212 injuries.
